We start our planning meetings for next year in a couple of weeks. You'll be hearing more from me about the date -- and about our theme (Hawaiian) for next August's conference! I have a brainstorm of getting a promo photo from you of the Groan-Ups wearing those Hawaiian shirts to use in the promotional materials and posters to even better publicize your presence at the event. We have almost a year to work on this -- but perhaps we can get together one of these days and pose your guys with lei's around their necks and looking tropical for a photo shoot! Just for grins, I did a google search on Jim & found this lovely site. What a hoot to get back in touch...Ryan is 18(!), 6'1", and a senior in H.S here in Irving . Ry has been playing bass guitar for 3 or 4 years now. He is an amazing bassist...Claypool is one of his heros. He is THE sound engineer/theatre tech. at school, drum tech./roadie for a great local Dallas band, "Hollow" & of course the leader of his own rock band, "Uncle Amy",(aka: always lookin' for a drummer...). Jim is on tour as system engineer with Showco, (call for tour details). I was recently layed-off after 4 years in the sign/graphics biz, but am having a great time pruning rose bushes, & learning how to work a weed-eater here at the house...(we're finally home-owners!) I just returned home a couple of hours ago, after hanging with Jim in Phoenix. I can tell you anything you want to know about Phoenix, as long as it concerns the Ritz Carlton, Mortons Steakhouse or America West Arena...Well, to make a long st... Being the Music Director and Music Arranger for production shows on the world's largest stage at the Reno Hilton Hotel Casino and Harvey's Hotel Casino @ Lake Tahoe, I would like to say that in my career, I have seen and heard many bands, and without a question of doubt I am proud to say, without hesitation or reservations, that The Groan-Ups are definitely and positively one of them. P.S. I vaguely remember being a band member in this musical gang of thugs back in the late 60's and early 70's under the names of Demian, All You Can Eat, and others that demand forgetting. If my memory serves me correctly, some member names were Tim Blunk, Gio Bruno, Jay Bruno, Roger Reynolds, Lewis Teague, Wes Hall, John Koon, myself, Byron somebody, Frank Cox, and others that escape me also contributed to the life of musical hoodlums that we led. Wasn't Frank Cox the first musician to perform Stairway to Heaven on a college campus at Conway? Mirror shades, E. Bartlett Band, high school dances in LR, NLR, and in particular-St. Mary's, and other memories are creeping back to me now, so I must get back to my bottle of scotch to try and drown them back out! It's one of them Wolverine steel toed jobs, size 14 I think -- yeah ole Maude might have big feet, but she sure can cook. Specially them collard greens, which as I always say, have made me the man I is today. Well you boys keep a playin' that pretty music and come on up to Vilonia and play at our church sometime. Jai first "picked up" a guitar in 1962 at just shy of 2 years of age! Actually, it was a plastic, TV PAL baritone ukulele and he would NOT be separated from it (see pix on his website). He called it MY (his) cut'ar". He tortured that cut'ar" (and his family) with many. . .many. . (sigh). . .MANY a baby ballad. Now if we are talking about when he was actually able to make intelligible noises with a guitar, it probaly WAS about '73. He had also learned to pronounce it by then. Love ya 'bird! Mom. I've seen you guys a few times, and I love how you are on stage! You are so "in tune" with each other and gets the crowd into the mood to dance and have a good time no matter age, race or religion :). Really. I think you guys are great! I was disappointed that Frank left out of his bio a reference to one of Little Rock's more notable musical gateways..."LR JR Cotillion".! With their music as the main event for several fundraising events in our area, the attendance and profit was phenomenal. They had the crowd
dancing, laughing, and wanting more!! Not only is their talent excellent, but, the members of the band are such gentlemen. We plan to have them back again soon!! It's good to see the Groanups are still going strong. What a great page! I have better things to do then leave messages. None of which come to mind right now. Don't eat yellow snow! But I just wanted you guys to know that this kind of music I can relate to and hope that one day I will be able to stand on stage with a band with as good a core as you and able to make people "feel" the music like you. that famous pre Groan-Ups band you never heard of. Me and the Mrs. was down at our capital city a year or two ago and saw you boys a playin' down there at that farmers market place. Shoot, you boys don't play like any farmers I ever knowed, and that's the God's truth. Anyhow, me and Maude -- that's the Mrs. -- enjoyed cuttin' a wide rug down there in the parkin' lot. And you know what? Old Maude got so worked up I thought she was gonna shuck her bloomers right in front of that "Gee-Yow" boy who sings so pretty.
Well, I best be closing for now, boys. You all love one another, and don't forget to eat lots of collard greens. Thems the food what made me what I is today. Cool web site!!
